It's a little before 5am Saturday morning and Tammi, 20, and Constanze, 21, have invited a few friends back to their suite at the four-star

For the girls, ending up in a hotel is not an unusual end to the evening. Indeed, the weekend before, they rounded off a night out in similar fashion at the Sanderson. And the two Fridays preceding that saw them up to the same sort of thing in a couple of very well appointed rooms at Grosvenor House and St Martin's Lane. Very nice for two language students from Battersea.

"It's like collecting hotels," says Tammi. "I used to live in Spain and I'm used to going out and clubbing late. England is one of the few places that still closes early. The only way to really continue the party is to get a room somewhere like this in the middle of town. And the price is good."

Their suite at Flemings consists of two cosy double bedrooms, a sitting room complete, naturally, with cable TV and CD, a kitchen with a fridge (more champagne), a nice big bathroom with unguents and fluffy bathrobes, and, in the corner, a Tardis of a shower. Ordinarily it would have cost them £500, but they got it for £165.

The standard price of the double room they took at the Grosvenor House is £405, but they got that for £116, a discount of 70 per cent. And they got between 30 and 40 per cent off the normal rate of £220 or so for their rooms at the Sanderson and St Martin's Lane.

"A cab to the West End from home costs me £20," continues Constanze. "And then, if you can find one, it's the same to get home. If you get four people sharing a suite like this it is going to cost them about the same as it would to go to the West End and back in cabs.

"And hotels are fun. We invite friends to our rooms for drinks before we go out, too. Then there's room service, breakfast in bed and you don't have to clear up. And you can bring back whoever you want. You feel like you're on holiday when you're not."

London hotel bookings are reportedly down by an average 17 per cent since 11 September, largely due to an absence of Americans. And Flemings - shiny oak and burgundy paper, prints of huntsmen and flyfishers, and suites named Austen and Dickens - is just the sort of place that is suffering more than most

from this. So, if you know how to go about it, there are currently bargains to be had in London hotel rooms.

The whopping discounts Tammi and Constanze are getting come courtesy of Tam Thompson's Hotel, a new hotel-room booking service for clubbers that has recently been set up by Tam Thompson, a director of Tokyo Joe's, the Mayfair club where Tammi and Constanze tend to spend Friday nights.

"I'm given 70 to 75 per cent off the rack rate, which is the price you would pay if you walked in off the street and asked for a room," explains Thompson. "I started getting rooms for a few friends who were going to Tokyo Joe's and wanted to carry the party on all night, because we close at 4am.
