Fourth Millionaire winner

A father 'obsessed by trivia' has become the fourth contestant to scoop the jackpot on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?

Quiz champion Pat Gibson won the £ 1million prize when the ITV show was recorded last Thursday.

Viewers on Saturday evening were left on tenterhooks as the 41-yearold answered the £250,000 question with two lifelines intact.

Because of two charity specials they must wait three weeks to see the computer programmer pick up his £1million cheque in the concluding part of the show.

After his win Mr Gibson, who lives in Wigan and works for a betting company, told friends: 'I dithered at the £16,000 mark, but apart from that it was easy.'

For the jackpot question, host Chris Tarrant asked Mr Gibson: 'Which of these races is not part of the American Triple Crown? His choices were the Preakness Stakes, the Belmont Stakes, the Arlington Million and the Kentucky Derby.

After using his 50/50 lifeline and phoning friend Mark Kerr, he correctly answered Arlington Million.

Friends said: 'We're sure he knew the answer anyway, but was just making certain.' Ironically, six weeks ago Mr Gibson helped Mr Kerr win £250,000 on Millionaire as his phonea-friend. Mr Gibson is the first person to win the jackpot since Major Charles Ingram was convicted of trying to cheat his way to a million last April.

Three other people have won the top prize. Judith Keppel, from West London, a distant cousin of Camilla Parker Bowles, was the first winner in November 2000.

Staffordshire teacher David Edwards followed six months later, and banker Robert Brydges, already a millionaire with homes in London and Hampshire, became the third winner in September 2001.

Mr Gibson had appeared on Millionaire before, but failed to make it past the 'fastest finger first' round.

Irish-born Mr Gibson met his wife Shelagh while at university in Belfast, and the couple have two children, Elizabeth, 11, and sevenyearold Noah.
