Five Black History Month events

This weekend's African culture celebration at the V&A is just one of a series of events designed to bring the history of Black London to life. Or catch the Anglo Carribean Domino final - people are playing for big bucks in Wandsworth.

The Real Hero of Anti-slavery

Move over William Wilberforce. In this debate at the Museum Of London, advocates of largely unsung black abolitionists try to persuade the audience to support their candidate as the true hero.

Back in the Day

Photos by Neil Kenlock captured the black cultural icons of Britain in the Seventies, including Bob Marley, Muhammad Ali, Linton Kwesi Johnson and Marvin Gaye. Kenlock, who arrived in the UK from Jamaica in 1963, worked as a freelance photographer for West Indian World newspaper before going on to co-found Choice FM.

History Mystery Trail

Sutton House has created an interactive trail containing information about key black Londoners. Related events include talks, storytelling sessions and dramatisations.

Black History in Focus

Short documentaries spotlighting key figures, including Paul Robeson and Marcus Garvey. This Sunday the focus is on Samuel Coleridge Taylor, the Holbornborn composer of An African Suite and Toussaint L'Ouverture. That's followed by a gallery talk by S.I. Martin about the African and Caribbean influences on Victorian London.

Black Poppies

A weekend of screenings and talks devoted to the African, Asian and Caribbean soldiers and civilians who served in the two world wars. Highlights include footage from the 1914-18 conflict with live piano accompaniment and an illustrated talk by Stephen Bourne about black women in wartime Britain, including his Aunt Esther who served as a fire watcher during the Blitz.
