Film romance

Special programmes for St Valentine's Day are rare, but the National Film Theatre is mounting a whole day of romantic movies on its two South Bank screens.

Among them are those evergreens Casablanca (6.30pm), Brief Encounter (8.40pm) and Breakfast At Tiffany's (8.45pm) - Bogart and Bergman , Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson and the incomparable Audrey Hepburn, all experiencing the pleasures and pangs of romance.

Brief Encounter and Breakfast ... are also showing in a double-bill at the Riverside Studios in Hammersmith (6.30pm and 8.35pm). For more modern - and less discerning - fare, you may want to try Love Actually, showing at 6.30pm at the West End Vue, WC2.

The most romantic new movie on general release is undoubtedly Wong Kar-Wai's 2046, in which Tony Leung's writer, mourning the end of his affair with a married woman, conducts an on-off paid affair with Zhang Zidi's call-girl. It's not just the story that offers us an anatomy of disappointed love but the romantic bliss of the film-making itself.
