Fashionable fogeys

Unbeknown to most of us, old people have become fashionable - see Vivienne Westwood, Judi Dench and marketing people who talk about 'older generation opinion-formers with credibility'.

Clubland has also fallen for the charm of the wrinkle: topping the bill at the seventh birthday of on-the-money comeshakethewhole at Cargo on Saturday is Louie Austen, a 57-year-old cult hero with a voice like Frank Sinatra.

Discovered crooning in a Vienna hotel lobby by electronic producers Mario Neugebauer and Cheap Records boss Patrick Pulsinger, Austen became a phenomenon following the release of Amore, a cheeky single that fused Ratpack singing and breezy summer electronica.

Factor in a sleazy electro collaboration with Peaches and a couple of acclaimed albums and you've got yourself a star that should not be missed. Cargo's stage will be decked out as a hotel lobby to add a touch of mature sophistication to the evening, and DJ support comes from ever-reliable Ewan Pearson and Stan Fontan, who will be playing upfront house, electro, disco, techno and funk.

Together takes over Turnmills on Saturday for a 'who needs Glastonbury?' special and also scores highly on the cool-old-duffer count: the fact that Shaun Ryder and Bez have reached their forties, having lost only their looks and ability to speak coherently, is clearly worth celebrating. They headline Room Three and are joined by fellow Mancunian Mani for a back-to-the-Hacienda session.

In the main room, Justin Robertson and Jon Carter do their bleepy house thing, with Dave Clarke dropping an electro set. If that all gets too much, Norman Jay (himself a stately 45 years old) brings his Good Times bag of tricks to Room Two, where he's ably assisted by Icelandic chill merchants Gus Gus and deep-house pin-up boys The Inland Knights.

The tabla-driven, bassheavy thud of Eastern Drum & Breaks is gaining quite a reputation for itself, so much so that O2 has teamed up with the club as part of its latest hearts-and-minds push. At Herbal tonight, residents Ges-E, Equal-I and Osmani Soundz are joined by Nitin Sawhney for a DJ set featuring the genuinely breathtaking tabla skills of Aref Durvesh - watch the man's hand turn into a blur.

Upstairs, Mukul and Zafrul throw together dub, soul and the odd Eastern soundscape. If you text EDB and your name to 83049 you will be put on the free guestlist and, if that doesn't sweeten you up, take comfort in the fact that involvement of technology should exclude anybody over 40 making it to the dancefloor.

The Paradise Garage is arguably the most mythologised club ever. It was a New York fixture between 1977 and 1987, and its principal DJ, Larry Levan, is considered by many to have been the finest to ever grace the turntables (he died in 1992 aged 38). The club played a key role in developing disco's musical offshoots.

At Niche at Egg on Saturday, Victor Rosado, one of the club's DJs, pays tribute to the Garage with a journey through the finest in black music. In the second room, Spen and Karisma - playing together for the first time in two years - lay down the musical, soulful house vibes that made their Basement Boys releases a favourite with DJs across the board.
