Esther plays the dating game

Esther Rantzen has asked to go on a TV show to help her find love again.

The 63-year-old That's Life host will appear on Would Like To Meet, in which relationship experts will teach her how to flirt and dress to attract a man.

She has been single since her husband, documentary maker Desmond Wilcox, died four years ago at the age of 69 after years of heart problems.

BBC2 controller Jane Root said Miss Rantzen had approached her about the idea at a party.

Miss Rantzen said: 'On the spur of the moment, I offered myself as a subject, because I believe there are many people in my situation.

' I was extremely lucky in my marriage to Desmond. We were great friends as well as being lovers and partners, and I do not for one moment think I can replace him.

'But there are many exciting and enjoyable experiences in my life which I would love to be able to share with someone.

'So I would like to meet someone, but who, and why, and how, I really don't know - perhaps the programme could teach me.' Miss Root said: 'It will be the same as any ordinary Would Like To Meet. She won't be dating other celebrities.

'She's very enthusiastic about it. It's great that someone of her age is saying, "I'm ready for love again".'

The programme will be part of a season called The Time Of Your Life, in which BBC2 challenges ' perspectives and attitudes to growing older'.
