Empty plinth: Your verdicts

The six proposed sculptures for Trafalgar Square's fourth plinth have certainly provoked public debate.

A week after The Evening Standard revealed the shortlist - with the decision due in March and the winning statue to remain in place for a year - Londoners have flocked to deliver their verdict.

While many readers were keen to vote for their favourite, others just wanted to say they detested the lot. Marc Quinn's statue Alison Lapper Pregnant is the early favourite.

The works were chosen by the Fourth Plinth Commissioning Group, appointed by Mayor Ken Livingstone. A spokesman for the group said: "People's input is vitally important to us.

"We hope many people will get down to the National Gallery, look at the proposed works and tell us what they think. They can do that either on comment cards at the gallery or on our website, www.fourthplinth.co.uk."

Below are just a few of the thousands of Evening Standard readers' suggestions we've received.

Howard Gleave: "The proposed concepts all share a certain 'Ratneresque' quality. It would be an obscenity if the Square were to be defiled by such a juvenile, self-indulgent and pathetic piece of politically correct crap."

Lyn Holmes: "Definitely the car, it's ironic and fab."

Andrea Moulding: "These are repulsive, especially This One's For The Pigeons, Skyscraper, Hotel For The Birds and Mannequin. The statue of the disabled friend is beautiful but would not fit in Trafalgar Square. No-o-war-r No-o-war-r is the best of the bunch."

Gary Trowsdale: "The best is No-owarr No-o-war-r. It would be a reminder not to repeat mistakes already made."

Steve O'Donnell: "There is not a statue more appropriate than one of the Queen on horseback in perhaps the Order of the Garter regalia." Rob Bedford: "Let's have a statue of our Rugby World Cup hero Jonny Wilkinson."

Chris Allen: "The fourth plinth should be used to display something that is patriotic, or celebrates world peace; some such 'larger' emotion than seeing a car with bird muck on."
