Ironically, Sir Christopher is also under attack by the 20th Century Society, as the new building would require the demolition of the college's singlestorey Gulbenkian wing, which is listed.
While the neighbours consider the new building too modern, Alan Powers of the 20th Century Society suggests it is not bold enough. "A Day-Glo orange box, perhaps. Goodness, if you're going to make a mess of it, at least do it with style."
Sir Christopher is unrepentant. "I can't worry too much about the Albert Hall views", he said. "The RCA must not become a waxworks, an organisation and building which does not advance with the times.
"We need the new building for our expansion, and I hope there is no planning inquiry", he said.
