EastEnders

After what has seemed like a never-ending downward spiral of dull, dull storylines, such as Vicki's astrology, Gus's record attempts, the Ferreiras' family revelations, the Ferreiras' mortgage arrears... (well, pretty much anything involving the Ferreiras, actually), here comes a watchable, touching episode of EastEnders. Cor blimey, guv.

After a turbulent relationship in which a baby has been born and adopted, Sonia's fiancé has been run over by a bloke who went on to become, er... her fiancé, and the entire Jackson family shipped to pastures unknown and apparently without access to telephones, spectacularly patient Sonia and ex-borstal barrow-boy Martin have finally decided to get hitched.

How sweet. Or rather, it would be, had Martin's mum - Pauline Fowler, a woman with all the sensitivity of a fridge-freezer - and Sonia's sort-of gran, Dot, not taken matters into their own hands and entered warp speed in an attempt to organise a full-on, jellied-eels, pie-and-mash wedding.

Our young lovebirds (Natalie Cassidy and James Alexandrou) have taken the only sensible course of action and run away to have the kind of wedding they actually want.

Of course, this being Stenders and all, not everyone is allowed to be loved up at the same time. So - using that happywordsplayed-over-the-top-of-sad-scenes technique that only EastEnders can really pull off, and which hopefully shows that the soap can get back on its feet - we hear Sonia and Martin's declarations of love while watching Kat and Alfie pick over the remains of their once-blissful relationship.
