DJs keep Peel legacy alive

John Peel's late-night show on Radio 1 will be taken over by three DJs, the station revealed yesterday.

The slot, renamed One Music, will remain dedicated to breaking new music in tribute to Peel, who died in October.

The 65-year-old championed unknown acts throughout his career and discovered dozens of major bands.

'It is widely accepted John Peel can never be replaced. The challenge therefore is to keep his legacy alive,' a spokesman said.

From next month, his 11pm to 1am slot will be taken over by Huw Stephens on Tuesdays, Ras Kwame on Wednesdays and Rob Da Bank on Thursdays.

Stephens called it a 'massive honour'. He added: 'No one will be able to fill John's shoes but we can at least make sure his inspiration keeps us hunting out the next musical gem.'

Peel died of a heart attack while on holiday in Peru.
