Day 1: Nat's already in tears

She has been in the jungle for all of a day.

But already the pressure is proving too much for Natalie Appleton.

Last night the 31-year-old singer was threatening to leave I'm A Celebrity - Get Me Out Of Here!

'I'm not pretending, I can't handle it,' she said as she broke down in tears. 'I've not slept for two days. I can't be Super Nat, I'm not.

'I'm going to go home. I don't know if I can do this. This is not me. I don't think I have got the strength. I can't snap out of it. I'm not mentally prepared for this right now - I can't do it.'

She added: 'My friends are watching me now and I know that I'm letting them down - I'm really sorry. Everyone is really sweet but I'm not right. I'm really tired. I'm exhausted.'

After talking to producers in the Bush Telegraph hut, Miss Appleton, who is married to Prodigy star Liam Howlett, agreed to spend another night in the camp but said: 'I don't know what to do. I don't think that I can sleep. I'm going stir crazy.'

No previous contestant has threatened to quit so early, although two - Danniella Westbrook and John Lydon - have actually walked out.

After her tearful performance, Miss Appleton then managed to infuriate her fellow contestants by screaming in the middle of the night: 'There's a spider on my bed. Can someone come and get it.'

But when nightclub owner Fran Cosgrove went to her rescue he could not find any creepy crawlies.

The singer Sheila Ferguson, 57, who up until then had been comforting Miss Appleton, admitted she was ready to 'kill her right now'.

Day One had started badly for all the celebrities as producers had a 4.00 am surprise in store for them. They were immediately put into two groups and told that one was going to parachute in to the camp in the Australian jungle while another would go by helicopter and horse.

Miss Appleton, journeying the latter way, started panicking almost as soon as her vehicle took off. A concerned Sophie Anderton told her: 'Breathe deeply baby, you're with us. Don't cry, you'll be fine.' Miss Appleton then asked for a sick bag saying: 'It's never happened to me before.'

But while three of the men - Cosgrove, comic Joe Pasquale and actor Antonio Fargas - all took part in the first Bushtucker Trial, all Miss Appleton and the rest of the group had to do on their first day was help set up camp.
