Dawn raids catch City faces

"Dawn raids" in the City mean sudden, unexpected buying forays at the opening of the day's share trading. To photographer Edward Barber, however, "dawn raids" are the swoops he made to compile a documentary record of the Square Mile in the summer of 1999.

There are 138 portraits in Barber's In The City project, some of which can be seen at the National Portrait Gallery from 29 August to 13 January.

All the portraits are published in the limited edition book, In The City. "The Square Mile is not easy for an outsider to penetrate," says Barber.

"These portraits are the result of a series of against-the-clock sorties and dawn raids into different workplaces and different lives."

Other portraits include Bank of England Governor Sir Edward George, Barbican managing director John Tusa, tailor Matthew Norton, despatch rider Von and architect Jenny Jones.

Until January 13 at the National Portrait Gallery
