The Wednesday night slot is a notoriously difficult one to fill, but Miss McCall, 39, said before her series started that she was feeling confident, and hoped to draw people in by using a style similar to Oprah Winfrey or Trisha Goddard.
Next week her show will be on an hour earlier at 7pm to fit in with a football match.
Newsreader Huw Edwards has signed a five-year deal to stay with the BBC. Edwards, who will now earn more than £300,000 a year, will continue to anchor the BBC1 Ten O'Clock News bulletin and will also present a 5pm to 6pm slot on BBC News 24.
