Daryl is evicted from tree

Police evicted Kill Bill star Daryl Hannah from a walnut tree as she tried to save an urban farm from demolition.

The actress, 45, and a fellow tree-sitter raised their fists in defiance as officers used a fire ladder and chain saws to cut through branches and remove them from the South Central Urban Gardens in Los Angeles.

Hannah, an environmental activist who played a mermaid in the film Splash, had spent 23 days in the tree. The action by police, some in riot gear, ended a three-week campaign that had attracted supporters including Joan Baez and Willie Nelson.

Police said 15 protesters were arrested during the seven-hour operation to clear the 14-acre farm, which has been tended for a decade by 350 residents, most of them immigrants.

Developer Ralph Horowitz plans to build a warehouse. He offered to sell the land to the gardeners for £9 million but they were unable to raise the sum.
