Classic that won't get on your wick

Once it was Get Carter. Now 1973's The Wicker Man is Brit cult favourite, confirming, I suppose, the current move back to horror. It's the ultimate 'we don't like strangers' plot and pits Edward Woodward as the fulminating Scottish methodist cop on the trail of a disappeared child on a remote island that has reverted to paganism.

Christopher Lee, Ingrid Pitt and Britt Ekland all add period, Hammer charm and you can watch the film in its originally released form on disc one, or in the director's version on disc two. The restored cuts are clearly visible, rescued from an old print. The original negative went into landfill to make the M3.

Verdict: Basket-case.
