Charging for Alexander

Your average Oxford don doesn't usually spend their days dressed in armour on the set of a major Hollywood movie. However, Robin Lane Fox - a leading expert on Alexander the Great and author of a definitive biography on the Macedonian King - was asked by director Oliver Stone to be the historical advisor on his film version of Alexander's life.

Lane Fox agreed, but on one condition: that he could ride among the first 15 in the major cavalry charges. This delightful film follows Lane Fox from his quiet Oxford home to the Moroccan desert, where he meets a doubtful crew, a foul-mouthed Colin Farrell and a director who insists on making up historical names for his warriors. It is an enjoyable and touching account of a man fulfilling a dream.
