Wilde inspirations

Spanish artist Jaume Plensa has made a series of sculptures inspired by the Bible's Song Of Solomon, as well as by Oscar Wilde's letters from Reading Gaol - at least that's what it says on the press release, for the inspiration appears entirely lost in the realised works.

We kick off with a sitting sculpture of a naked male figure that, we learn, is a figure of the artist as Oscar Wilde. However, there's not much to suggest it has anything to do with Wilde. At least there's no literal physical morphing, although some raised lettering on the body, made up of single words or phrases, may be from Wilde's De Profundis.

Elsewhere, a line of weighing scales snake through the main part of the gallery, their brass dishes etched with words that suggest opposites and dualities: Earth/Air, Blood/Semen, Land/Soul and so on. Some make more sense than others.

The scales then lead to a series of hanging steel curtains, which are made up of words taken from Song Of Solomon. However, as the letters are all regularly spaced, it's difficult to read and rather than a work truly inspired by the text, you simply get extracts of the text itself, which is all rather doggedly literal.

The final pieces in the installation are a couple of Tardis-like structures, one pink, one blue, on which there is some Hebrew text, and Glass Man, another self-portrait, which is made up of glass vessels containing blood, each vessel making up the limbs, the feet, the head, the stomach and pelvis.

These components are arranged on the floor; fragments, like the disparate elements that make up this show that don't add up to any coherent or convincing whole.
