When pop was innocent

This showcase of the singers who launched our lasting love affair with black American dance music, was curated by veteran music photographer, David Redfern. It will inspire nostalgia in some viewers and envy for those who didn't experience the Motown sound first time around.

Redfern's mostly colour photographs sit among classic black-and-whites taken by New York counterparts Michael Ochs, Don Paulsen and James Kriegsman.

This is no mere retro music show: it also encompasses the history of fashion and culture. In Redfern's "Little" Stevie Wonder, the 14-year-old singer liberates the cardigan and red polo shirt from the white, preppy crooners, while the girl groups subvert the sequinned cocktail-party look with bouffant wigs.

Singing and dancing were key to Motown's success, and Kriegsman's live photograph of The Temptations in their silk suits demonstrates the group's massively influential precision choreography. Many of the photographs here were shot during the pioneering cult TV shows Ready Steady Go! and Thank Your Lucky Stars, when London was beginning to swing and Mary Quant was launching her fashion revolution.

Martha and The Vandellas break with sequins to pose in Quant-like, pop-art PVC dresses, the suave Marvin Gaye (Paulsen, 1964) plays a conga drum during a break and Smokey Robinson airs the harmonies for My Girl with his backing singers.

Kriegsman's portraits are the most artistically self-conscious: set against a white background in Avedon style, they are iconic headand-shoulder prints with the texture of velvet.

Berry Gordy, who scooped up these style-conscious kids from the Detroit ghetto, makes rare appearances - but his presence, like these photographs in this small but perfect exhibition, is a reminder of a brief period of optimism and innocence in music.
