Christopher Doyle: There Is A Crack In Everything

Arguably the best cinematographer around, Doyle's impact in the world of film is immense. Through collaborations with south east Asian filmmakers such as Edward Yang, Chen Kaige and, most particularly, Wong Kar-Wai, Doyle has developed a way with colour that is not simply breathtaking visually, but laden with dramatic and emotional portent.

Here, in his first photography exhibition in Britain, Doyle shows some 40 prints, almost entirely taken on film sets.

The prints are organised by colour - the gallery walls painted red, green, blue and gold, offset Doyle's images beautifully. These are not big prints, but the fact that you have to get right up close leads you beyond the initial chromatic kick into the detail. And the detail is where Doyle uncovers the cracks of the title: whether it's wallpaper, dress fabric or a bowl of noodles, he has a unique eye for spotting and then exploiting an edgy texture or provocative contrast. The results are uncommonly erotic.

These vibrant, sexy images don't simply make you yearn to watch the films again, they catapult you deep inside the frame. You can hear the rain beating down in Wong Kar-Wai's Happy Together and taste the sexual tension building through the sequence from In The Mood For Love.
