Wapping great move for Mirren

Actress Helen Mirren has bought a new home in London. She has spent an estimated £1.6 million on a Grade Il listed Georgian house in Wapping with panoramic views over the Thames. The Prime Suspect actress normally divides her time between the Beverly Hills mansion of her husband, American film director Taylor Hackford, and her two bedroom bachelor flat in Battersea. "Helen and Taylor plan to work more in Europe and therefore need a bigger home," reveals an aide. "Decorators are currently converting it to their taste." The imposing four-storey house has four/five bedrooms and a self-contained staff flat.

Hugh Grant and his former girlfriend Liz Hurley could be your neighbours if you spend £845,000 on a Chelsea house for sale through McKee and Co. The three-bedroom, two-bathroom property is off Fulham Road and includes a kitchen/breakfast room and a roof terrace. "Hugh is always mooching around the local delicatessen and paper shop in his jeans," reports a resident. "We see less of Liz, who's usually getting in and out of limousines." An added attraction is the street's rampant cherry blossom every spring.

Victor Edelstein, the former fashion designer of Diana, Princess of Wales, has sold his modern one-bedroom flat in Bloomsbury for £250,000 and is buying a £225,000 studio flat in Knightsbridge. The second-floor Victorian conversion is conveniently near Sloane Square. "My wife Annamaria and I spend most of our time in Italy and Spain," he explains. "So we wanted to buy somewhere safe and central that we could just lock up and forget when we weren't living there."

Mick Jagger's feisty first wife, Bianca, is looking for a flat to rent in Knightsbridge. The socialite turned civil-rights campaigner is based in New York but wants to live nearer daughter Jade and grandchildren Assisi and Amba. "A three-bedroom apartment with a large reception room in a mansion block would suit Bianca nicely," says her letting agent Charles Champion. Her budget? £1,000 a week.
