The design in process

Visual futurist Syd Mead, 70, designed concepts for Blade Runner, Star Trek: The Motion Picture and 2010. Of his work for TRON, he says: 'I decided to go into the reasons why a tank looks like a tank, why an aircraft carrier looks like an aircraft carrier and why a bike looks like a bike.

"I had to enlarge on that and yet keep it simple enough so we could animate it and for that instant recognisability to be carried into the final design. I had to go through exactly the same process again for TRON 2.0 using contemporary sensibilities.'
