His sex life was incredibly tangled. He met his first wife, Eva, after they'd both emerged from sanatoriums. When she had to be re-admitted, she pushed a fellow-patient, Margaret, in Brandt's direction, in order to "take care of him".
She became his second wife. But Eva never vanished. He preferred always to have an overt or covert ménage à trois. When he married his third wife, Noya (who was among Delany's many interviewees), Eva was a witness at the wedding.
Brandt was obsessed with prostitutes, as was another great photographer, Brassaï. But in Paris, Brassaï photographed real whores. Brandt got Eva, Margaret or transient models to play the parts.
One of the final nude shots, which Delany includes in his many illustrations, shows a naked woman with her head in a black bag and her pubic hair scribbled over in black ink.
For most of Brandt's life, the obsessions bubbled underneath the photos, never rising to the surface. But Delany lays bare the stories which give his shots their kick - their unique mystery.
