Sinsel's mini egg art

What a cute and kitsch little exhibition this is. German-born artist Daniel Sinsel paints in miniature. He makes strange, talismanic sculptures using various materials: eggshell, horsehair, precious stones, crystals, walnuts, coconuts, bits of gold leaf.

One cheeky wall-hanging shows two teardrop-shaped amethysts drooping from two painted paper cones. Another shows a prettily painted egg spouting two plaster antlers encrusted with diamond dust and tiny yellow sapphires, growing a tail of horsehair. It looks like some strange fetish for worshipping at the altar of camp.

The paintings are full of homoerotic longing. A boy wearing a blue pearl necklace opens his mouth in a wide O; another plays with himself in the grass. There are suggestions of Saint Sebastian, the beautiful martyr shot through with arrows.

Possibly gleaned from a porno mag - a regular source of inspiration for the artist - a young man turns to face us, a coquettish smile playing on his lips, his back bloodied with fresh whip marks. On his head he wears a coiled ribbon, a recurring motif of Sinsel's.

Another painting, painted on an egg, shows a face punctured by spears. These bloodier images are, evidently, not so cute. But Sinsel paints in a flat, illustrative fashion that undermines any suggestion of gratuitous or genuine horror. They're not exactly great paintings but they do make interesting, decorative artefacts.
