Searching for love

DVD: The Story Of Adele H (MGM Home Entertainment, 12, £15.99)

No film Francois Truffaut made was ever anything less than intensely watchable, and the (true) story of Victor Hugo's daughter is no exception. Isabelle Adjani is the beautiful but fragile Adele, journeying to the New World in 1863 in search of the British officer she loves.

He turns out to be a cad, but Adele - daughter of the most famous living writer - is a better fabulist than her father, steeping herself in her fiction until she loses touch with reality.

Truffaut's lack of English betrays itself in the direction of the Anglophone scenes, but Adjani is great, as is Nestor Almendros' photography.
