Schiffer's list: the wedding booty

Claudia Schiffer is a homely girl whose wedding list shows she is at heart more practical than superstar. Her list, with Mayfair emporium Thomas Goode, reflects the German model's down to earth upbringing - she would rather take a bus than pay for a taxi - and most of the presents are destined for the kitchen.

Ms Schiffer and fiancè Matthew Vaughn have compiled a list containing 432 largely reasonably priced items ... which nevertheless totals £26,333. That pales into insignificance compared with the £250,000 worth of gifts Liza Minnelli requested for her (fourth) wedding to David Gest in March.

The couple spent hours browsing at the South Audley street store, described as "the hallmark of consummate taste and sophistication". Windows and cabinets display an array of expensive, opulent goods, such as two giant ceramic elephants - a snip at £5 million the pair - and a marble-topped Louis XVI style table for £27,000.

Vaughn, who produced Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, recently said: "My friends are not ambitious or pretentious, they are just ordinary people" and the couple have not asked for anything that would burn a hole in anyone's pocket as they seek to furnish their new £5 million home, Coldham Hall in Suffolk.

On the list are two boxes of six egg spoons, priced at £30 each. One item is a crystal and sterling silver decanter in the shape of a golf ball, perfect for golf-loving Schiffer.

There's a coffee set, with the saucers costing £10.75 each - and they'd like 24 of those, thank you. A humble John Jenkins glass butter dish at £17 might be more appropriate from someone feeling the pinch. Alternatively, there's a leather waste paper bin for £77.50. Topping the lot in terms of price is a giant cut-glass cup mounted on a stand at £925.

The wedding next Saturday is the subject of speculation in the model's home town of Rheinberg in Germany and Britain. Scant details have been released and Hello! and OK! have not been invited. The couple have decided it would be far "too tacky" to publicise their special day and have asked friends and family to leave their cameras at home. They are keeping the exact location of the ceremony a secret with guests Madonna and Guy Ritchie, Sting and Sir Elton John being informed only hours before.

The rumour circulating is that the wedding will be held in a Suffolk church.

They've asked guests to take part in a friendly football match and "other sporting activities" the morning after.

A friend in Germany said: "Claudia is seen here as a quiet, respectable girl who comes from a good family. She is the kind of girl who wants value for money - don't forget her mother is an accountant. She is the type who would rather take a bus than cab and doesn't go for overthetop."
