The criminal gang - psychotically callous, irreparably damaged by abuse and prison life and mostly high on drugs - are brilliantly delineated and Piglia's scratchy, staccato and bewildering style give a true sense of the chaos of the events depicted, especially during the final Wild Weststyle showdown between the holed-up robbers and 300 armed Uruguayan policemen.
