Re-live the Swinging Sixties

Some of the greatest artworks of the Swinging Sixties return to London today as part of an exhibition dedicated to the coolest decade of all.

Works such as David Hockney's Tea Painting In An Illusionistic Style have been obtained by Tate Britain for a new show called Art And The 60s: This Was Tomorrow.

The exhibited works capture the experimental spirit of the decade. One sure to be a hit is Nicholas Monro's Martians from 1965; four alien figures, wide-eyed and comically rendered in glass fibre. The exhibition also looks at the events and architecture that shaped the decade.

Photographs of key events, such as the 1968 demonstrations in Grosvenor Square against the Vietnam War, provide a topical backdrop to the art.

Tate Britain curator Chris Stephens said: "The Sixties was one of those moments when art reached a wider audience."

Art And The 60s is at Tate Britain until 26 September.
