Ready to strip?

It's amazing what you can do with fluorescent strip lighting. Harsh and ubiquitous, it's to be found flickering in the most commonplace of environments, illuminating car parks and offices with an unhealthy pallid hue.

But American artist Dan Flavin, who died in 1996, managed to make beautiful environments with them, placing the strips in pleasing sculptural arrangements or just using a single tube nailed vertically or diagonally to the wall like thrusting, triumphant strips of blazing colour in a Malevich painting.

Using only five colours and four kinds of white, Flavin always ordered direct from the electrician's catalogue, non-customised and restricted only to available lengths: 2ft, 4ft, 6ft and 8ft. Like his fellow industrial minimalists Carl Andre and Donald Judd, he found a kind of poetry in these uncompromising, masculine materials.

All the iconic works in this small but lovingly put together exhibition date from the 1960s. Tucked up in a side room on the first floor is the work that kicked it all off, a piece that provided the eureka moment when Flavin would decide to devote himself exclusively to fluorescence. That piece is 'the diagonal of May 25, 1963', a deep red 8ft strip angled at 45 degrees.

Elsewhere, arrangements of red, pink, yellow, green and blue light dispense an ethereal veil of colour throughout the gallery while, in cool white, are three architectural spires that are 'monuments' to V Tatlin, the visionary constructivist who designed an unbuilt tower in homage to the Russian Revolution.
