Former Wimbledon star Annabel Croft is well on her way in a new career: property development. Two years ago she bought a "run-down" five-bedroom Sixties house near Richmond, close to the homes of comic Jimmy Tarbuck and Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood. "I've now got planning permission to knock it down and am going to build this amazing Georgianstyle house," declares Annabel, who has three children, Amber, Charlie and Lily, from her marriage to yachtsmanturned-City banker, Mel Coleman. "We've also bought some extra land from the council for the tennis court and a most beautiful garden."

Clothes designer Suzanne Malim has sold her threebedroom Chelsea home, one of the last remaining Georgian houses in the King's Road. It fetched £2 million through Kaye & Carey and comes with a brown plaque to Victorian actress Ellen Terry. Suzanne, niece of Sixties socialite Lady Docker, has decamped with her South African husband, Andrew, to Gloucestershire. "She has bought a lovely rectory near Cirencester," says a friend.

Rugby fans who fancy living near World Cup superstar Jonny Wilkinson might consider buying a mini-stately home outside Hexham, Northumberland. But, whereas the Newcastle Falcons fly-half owns a remote £675,000 stone farmhouse nearby, Callerton Hall is a pukka Georgian pile. Set in 12 acres, including a walled garden, it has six bedrooms, a gym and a cinema. "The owner has spent a fortune modernising it," says Knight Frank, which is asking £1.5 million

Things are looking up for Alan Bond, the Australian tycoon who went bankrupt in 1992 owing £112 million and spent four years in jail for fraud. He has been house-hunting in Knightsbridge and Belgravia for a home for himself and his theatre-producer wife, Diana Bliss. Ealing-born "Bondie", as he is dubbed, clearly has not lost his sense of humour. After one agent showed him a property near Harrods with a multi-million price tag, he scoffed: "I won't live in a terraced house like Coronation Street!"
