Also astonishing are the costumes, which are intricately constructed from proper materials and metals, with the minimum of synthetics. They are arranged sometimes in serried ranks, sometimes singly, sometimes just hanging, others with lifelike and life-size inhabitants. Looking at the various outfits - the Hobbits' clothes, by the way, were modelled on English rustic clothes of the 1800s - it strikes me once again that the baddies always get the best gear.
