Lloyd Webber's latest show

These are just a few of the 200 masterpieces from Lord Lloyd-Webber's astonishing private art collection that are to go on display for the first time in a major autumn exhibition at the Royal Academy.

Lord Lloyd-Webber has spent much of his estimated £450 million fortune on amassing fine art. Until now, the collection has been hidden away at the musical impresario's Berkshire estate.

The RA will show about 70 per cent of his collection of pre-Raphaelite paintings. It includes 15 works by Rossetti, including Ophelia and The Vision Of Fiammetta, as well as 30 works by Burne-Jones, including Mirror Of Venus. Waterhouse, Hunt, Millais and Richard Dadd are other key artists whose works will be on show from the mostly 19th-century collection.

The composer of Cats and Starlight Express has been collecting art since he was a teenager. He said last night: "I don't know what people will think of the exhibition - it is very much a personal collection based on my own taste." Lord Lloyd-Webber, who was recently ranked 29th in The Art Review's list of most powerful figures, added: "The collection is the only thing I really spend money on. It's true that I write music to buy art."

He also owns Picasso's masterpiece Angel Fernandes de Soto, which he bought for £20 million and the £10.12 million Canaletto, Old Horseguard's Parade. Both are in the show.

The RA had planned an exhibition of great Egyptian antiquities but the war in Iraq delayed its preparation.

Exhibitions secretary Norman Rosenthal said: "Andrew Lloyd Webber agreed to bring this long-planned exhibition forward. We are very grateful indeed."
