She has never won so much as a raffle before. But today Lesley Prescott is celebrating winning a fabulous designer flat in the Evening Standard's summer competition.

Ms Prescott was so sure she didn't stand a chance of scooping the top prize, worth £270,000, that she has just bought a home in Hammersmith.

Now she has the enjoyable dilemma of deciding whether to stay in west London or move to the one-bedroom flat in Britannia Walk, between Hoxton and Islington.

Either way, with her new second home offering long-term financial security, the 46-year-old is happily making plans to spend the next few months travelling.

She said: "I think whatever happens it will change my life; it will make a huge difference. I am absolutely beside myself, it is just so hugely exciting."

Ms Prescott, who works in product development at Debenhams, beat about 115,000 entrants to win the flat which was donated by Goldcrest Homes.

The apartment is part of a development that boasts its own 16-seat cinema and a gym that opens onto a rooftop terrace. Ms Prescott has until next July, when the flat is finally finished, to make up her mind which home she will live in.

Whatever she decides to do with her future she said she will no longer have to worry about the financial side of it. "My boyfriend was delighted for me but he's sensible and told me to keep my feet on the ground," she said. "It is hard working in London. Living costs are expensive, but now I don't want to go anywhere else."
