Is is art, or wallpaper?

Now that the function of art seems to have been replaced largely by interior design - and the designer elevated to the status of artist - it seems more than fitting that artists themselves should appropriate the aesthetics of interior design.

Rudolf Stingel attempts to wittily subvert the slick mechanics of reproduction by producing flawed products and concentrating on the retrokitsch of flock wallpaper. So we get several large-scale 'paintings' of gold-coloured flock offset by fluffy wall-to-wall carpeting in a nondescript, institutional dark blue.

But the wallpaper's swirling patterns reveal, on closer inspection, the tiny glitches of the flawed mechanical process responsible for producing them. We get an overall effect of shoddiness rather than a pristine, machine-made aesthetic: they look OK to begin with but their patchiness is revealed up close.

On the second floor, the theme of mechanical reproduction is repeated in three text works on paper. These share the same jokes and newspaper cartoon images but with variations in font and layout.

Treading in the footsteps of Andy Warhol, the work underlines that we live not only in an age of mass production but also in one that constantly recycles words and images, a banal observation. Like that of Warhol, each work has subtle, sometimes accidental variations but perhaps the banality of Stingel lies more in the recycling of once-pertinent ideas.
