Spy writer Nigel West and his brother Julian are likely to share a £6 million bonanza when their octogenarian mother Nuala Allason sells the family home in Chelsea. The six-bedroom house in Cheyne Walk, overlooking the Thames, has been the scene of some magnificent society balls since she bought it more than 50 years ago. John D. Wood is the agent.

Former It girl Tara Palmer-Tomkinson is changing her Chelsea image. She is selling her two-bedroom, ground-floor flat a champer's cork pop away from Fulham Road's Beach for £320,000. "I couldn't believe it when Foxtons told us it was so valuable," says her mother Patti Palmer-Tomkinson. "Tara hasn't yet made up her mind where she's going to live next. At the moment she's in temporary accommodation."

Interior decorator Hugh Poole-Warren is selling his South Kensington basement flat for £440,000 through Boyle and Co. The two-bedroom Cornwall Gardens property is on an 86-year lease. "I'm moving to the country," explains Poole-Warren, who specialises in decorating Scottish castles. "I've bought an old piggery near Cirencester which I'm doing up."

Film director Ken Loach, whose movies - including Kes, Cathy Come Home and, most recently, My Name Is Joe - delve into the social problems of life, has just bought a five-bedroom Georgian terraced house in Hampstead, which was on the market through Savills. Locals think he wouldn't have got much change from £1 million.

Sir Clive Sinclair has finally exchanged contracts on the sale of his three-bedroom, seventh-floor penthouse in King's Cross and is house-hunting in the Trafalgar Square area. The buyer of the apartment in York Central is fashion photographer Grey Zisser, whose neighbours will include David Bailey. Similar flats go for about £1 million, says agent Trading Spaces.

After living in it for just two years, singer and choreographer Paula Abdul has sold her two-bedroom apartment near Sunset Strip in Los Angeles. She's believed to have got close to the £405,000 asking price for the flat, which comes with the use of a rooftop pool and tennis court.
