Sow hardy annual flowers outside in the open garden.

Buy young plants and seedlings from garden centres or by mail order; you'll find plenty of designer colours and bright mixtures.

Feed roses with a specific rose fertiliser like Bio Toprose to keep them happy all season; use it on shrubs too.

Buy dahlia tubers from the garden centre. Plant them in 12.5cm/5in pots of fresh potting compost, keep them in a light, but frost-free place to develop and plant in May.

Sow spring onions and lettuce in soil which has been warmed under sheets of clear polythene.

Pick camellia flowers, then float them in a bowl of water for a centrepiece.
