Get the ball rolling

Sometimes posing as complex conundrums, sometimes as light as puffs of air, Martin Creed's work isn't easy to pin down.

Though their titles simply consist of a catalogue number followed by a dry, literal description, one senses that perhaps not all of what you see is what you get.

Work No.227: The Lights Going On And Off might be a case in point. Shown as part of Creed's 2001 Turner Prize nomination (he won), it consisted of pretty much nothing, save what it said on the label.

However, by paring down a work to the very essence of visual experience - light and its absence - there certainly seemed to be more going on than what literally met the eye.

In this new exhibition, Creed proceeds as he has always done, with a playfully light touch. In the main gallery, the floor is covered with balls of all sizes and colours. Far from his usual minimalist presentation, this looks like the aftermath of a nursery school riot.

Upstairs, ten pieces of paper are coloured in with felt tip pen, while nearby the word 'Love' is lit up in white neon.

What arch game is Creed playing this time? Or is he simply trying to introduce a feel-good factor?

More satisfying is the singing lift, Work No.371: Elevator ooh/aah up/down. It does bring a smile to the face, though one would be hard pushed to argue that these new works have much imaginative purchase.
