German exchange

Despina Stokou and Martin Pfahler are two German artists taking part in an exchange programme with a pair of London-based artists.

Deptford's APT Gallery, located in the heart of Deptford near the new award-winning Laban Centre, is displaying the Germans' specially commissioned work.

In a storyboard of words and photos, Stokou has documented her daily experiences of painting a picture of a sprawling 1960s Deptford housing estate before its demolition to make way for a new housing complex.

We learn that the New Haddo estate was used as the grim location for Mike Leigh's All Or Nothing but, what's more, interesting is the rapport Stokou forms with the builders and those living near the site. They all seem intrigued by her project, offering her words of encouragement and advice. Stokou is sad to leave, although the resulting painting is not quite as engaging as her documentation.

While Stokou's effort is perhaps a little too self-consciously heart-warming in its appeal, Martin Pfahler's austere installation, Arena Cut (pictured), is a large-scale cardboard model of two crosssections of a stadium. Supported by sturdy metal stilts, at least it's quite well-made, if nothing else.
