Fried and feathered

California-born artist Fred Tomaselli grew up next door to Disneyland, where, he says, he would see Tinkerbell soaring through the sky from his bedroom window.

He also came of age in the early 1970s, when the use of psychotropic drugs featured heavily among a post-hippy crowd. These two experiences have clearly had an abiding influence on his work.

Part paintings, part meticulously detailed collages, Tomaselli uses magazine cut-outs, brightly-coloured pills, hallucinogenic plants and medicinal herbs in his work, forming them into intricate patterns before suspending them in a thick layer of clear epoxy resin.

Figures of birds and strange mythical creatures resemble detailed anatomical drawings, their 'innards' made up of collaged pictures of hands or lips or eyes, a dizzying repetition of detail. In Metal Destroyer, a Shiva-type figure with six pairs of arms nimbly bangs a set of drums, its mouth spewing forth a cascade of cut-out eyes.

As its title might suggest, this looks like the cover of a heavy metal album, one executed while the artist was having a bad acid trip. Much prettier is Doppelganger Effect, in which multi-coloured beads loop towards a central point, which is, in fact, two panels pushed together, their patterns imperfectly mirroring each other.

Painstakingly crafted, these images are initially very seductive. But when you get close up, there's a lot of clumsy painting, and this jars with their apparently meticulous execution.
