Disappearing love shacks

Voyeurism is nothing new to Kyoichi Tsuzuki. Among this photographer, editor and writer's 30 books are Portable Ecstasy: Aesthetics Of Contemporary Adult Toys and Rosso Italiano: Sensuous Visuals Of The Campari Campaign.

But his latest exhibition, Satellite Of Love: The Vanishing Beauty Of Japanese Love Hotels, is a unique blend of kitsch, sex and social history. These hotels appear both unmistakably sexual and oddly innocent - rooms with clear bathtubs or revolving circular beds, rooms with a pickled sense of fun that can make them look like a toymaker's love shack.

These pictures study the craftfulness of Japanese eroticism. They are also a memorial for a dying tradition. The country's New Public Morals Act has put strict limits on where sex-related businesses can operate.

Sex hotels have long prided themselves on constant revamps. Now, a change of design will give the authorities the right to re-examine licences. So these remarkable establishments are toning themselves down, toeing the line to avoid interference.

As with his book Tokyo Style, Tsuzuki's emphasis on interiors allows the viewer to project the human element into the pictures. With no people visible, the toys and furniture, the rocket-shaped bed and the pig pouffes all assume a sexual identity. Those with a thing for the Japanese fetish for dandy artifice should not miss this stylish catalogue of kinkiness.
