Brixton: The Art Of Life

'The funk, the vibe, the true ultra sense of Brixton has been captured beautifully by your eye. Bring us some more!' So goes one of the public comments in the notebook that accompanies Rebecca Harman's Brixton: The Art Of Life photography exhibition.

A sense of wanderlust, plus an ability to 'be there at the right time' has taken Harman from studying fashion, photography and doing her fair share of camera assisting in Barcelona, to rubbing shoulders with many of the best photographers found Stateside.

A working gig testing models at Mario Testino's studio meant being in an arena that harbours many of New York's top photographers, so it wasn't too long before Rebecca herself was snapped up by world-class photographer Steven Meisel to model for a Calvin Klein clothing campaign. Not bad, as this set her on a financial path that's led to her first solo show.

The Art Of Life at Brixton's Fridge Gallery works as a vibrant document of street culture, with more than 30 large prints showing some of Brixton's backdrops and characters. The Funky Woman, the Eagle Man, the Unhappy Shopper and the Green Man are some of the images showcased in the gallery's 1930s art deco hangar-sized space, while a reggae sound system and painted backdrops of red, gold and green all add to the spiritual vibe.
