Blank-faced canvas

Austrian duo Markus Muntean and Adi Rosenblum paint teen alienation. Their slightly spooky-looking hipsters look like the listless models in a Calvin Klein ad, though the artists occasionally add a bit of art historical referencing, too.

The paintings, which used to be quite small but are now huge, come with neat little homilies, such as: 'Life is an experimental journey that we make involuntarily'. While pondering their significance, you can also wonder at what labels the listless kids on the street are wearing.

In the main room of the gallery, the duo have largely dispensed with the image and cut and pasted words from magazines to form cod-religious tracts. Next door to this, a video work has a camera tracking across a near-empty car park populated with more of the beautiful androids. A voiceover intones, though it's difficult to make out what is being said due to poor sound quality.

This doesn't really matter as it's kind of hypnotic anyway, though perhaps this is due mainly to a great soundtrack - courtesy of Italian baroque composer Alessandro Scarlatti - and not to the seductive power of the spoken word.

Whether any of this is executed with a measure of irony doesn't really matter, for we've become so familiar with the language of advertising that - fun though this is - it is no more than a form of painting by numbers, to be appreciated on the most superficial level.
