At the Harrods art sale there were paintings by legends such as Warhol and Picasso, but the real money was spent on a work by a lesser-known Australian artist.

Rolf Harris's impressionistic piece, entitled Flower Seller At The Elephant and Castle, sold for £95,000.

The competition was tough - Andy Warhol's iconic Marilyn Monroe silkscreen prints were on sale for £55,000, while a limited edition Picasso etching had a £16,250 tag. The anonymous female collector who decided to buy the Harris masterpiece apparently had no idea who he was and was thus unaware of the joys of his musical career and television art shows.

Harris has remained a serious artist throughout his TV career in programmes such as Animal Hospital. The entertainer has also carved out a musical niche using aboriginal instruments on hits Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport and his reworking of Led Zeppelin's Stairway To Heaven.

Russell Green, director of the Halcyon Gallery, which is staging the sale at Harrods, said that Harris was an exceptional artist, which justified the £95,000 price - believed to be the highest sum paid for the artist. He said: "This is a woman who collects beautiful art and knows a good painting when she sees it. She had never heard of him before.''

Harris was born in Perth in 1930 but has lived in the UK for much of his life. The sale is likely to push up the value of his paintings, according to Mr Green, because the artist is in his seventies and doesn't paint that much any more.

Speaking about the sale Rolf Harris said: "The ordinary man and woman in the street feel intimidated and embarrassed when they walk into a gallery.

"This sale is a way of getting everyone to appreciate art. It should not be elitist - it should be accessible to everybody. This gallery is an absolutely magic idea and is important in breaking down barriers around art. Hopefully, people will come to see these paintings."
