Other regional categories include best Sri Lankan, Nepalese, Pakistani and Punjabi restaurants. The Best Chef award goes to Yogesh Datta from the Painted Heron in Chelsea, known for his seafood kedgeree with hot Goan sauce.
The best curry outside London is to be found at Jaipur in Milton Keynes, according to the judges. Describing itself as "the biggest purpose-built Indian restaurant in Europe", it is renowned for its lamb with Indian lime.
Good Curry Guide author Pat Chapman said he chose Madhu's as overall winner this year because of its combination of atmosphere and food. "It's an eyebrow-raising choice because it's outside the centre," he said.
"But Sanjay is perhaps one of the most enthusiastic people I know and his enthusiasm comes through in the restaurant. It's buzzing with Asians, Europeans, every nationality."
