'I love seeing the Queen and I have always been a royalist,' said Sir Tom, who first met the monarch at a royal charity performance in 1966. 'She is lovely. Her whole face lights up when she smiles.'
Asked what she had chatted about during the ceremony, the legendary lothario said: 'She asked me how long I had been giving people pleasure. I told her 41 years.'
Sir Tom, who was knighted under his real name Thomas Woodward, has been married to his childhood sweetheart, Linda, for 49 years. But she was not at his side yesterday, having refused to leave their Los Angeles home for several years.
Their enduring marriage has not, of course, stopped her husband fathering a son, Jonathan, by model Katherine Berkery in 1989 or being linked with several dozen other beauties.
They include exotic dancer Miss James, whom he met during a trip to Stringfellows shortly after it was announced he would be getting an OBE in 1999.
So did his legendary charm leave a twinkle in the eye of the Beverley Sisters? 'It's all been a bit too much for us, dear,' said Babs. 'We're going home for a cup of tea.'
