Animate the world

Young film buffs can spend the whole weekend immersed in the movies when the Barbican hosts its first Family Film Festival.

Running alongside the screening of five new animated films are workshops exploring the various types of animation. Children will be able to create their own two-dimensional fantasy worlds in the drawing animation workshop, inspired by screenings of The King's Beard and The Little Bear Movie.

A model animation of the story of Jesus Of Nazareth, entitled The Miracle Maker, is the inspiration behind the model-animation workshops where participants sculpt and shape characters, then bring them to life on screen.

The third workshop shows how the art of shadow-puppet theatre can be combined with film to create an infinite number of possibilities, some of which can be seen in the film Princes And Princesses, which features the adventures of a shadow puppet boy and girl in Ancient Egypt, the Middle Ages and the year 3000.

The films and workshops are aimed at ages five to 11.
