So all's well that ends well. After weeks of agonising about how much blood might be shed at this year's Notting Hill Carnival, we can rejoice that more than one million people joined the party with few arrests and none of the violence which ruined it last year. Claire Holder, the combative head of the Notting Hill Carnival Trust, which runs the celebrations, has been beleaguered of late. Both she and the Metropolitan Police should take credit for a job well done. God knows, they receive enough flak when things go wrong. Nature should take credit too. Sunday's showers probably depressed crowd numbers overall.
