A mixture of madness

The madly eclectic reach of Canadian artist Rodney Graham takes in Freud, Wagner, the science of optics and American sculptor Donald Judd, to name but a few. This exhibition just about manages to contain them into some sort of coherence.

On the ground floor are attractive photographs of inverted trees together with a full-size 19th century American postal wagon. Kitted out with a camera obscura, the wagon is diagonally lined with a palm tree on the other side of the room. If you get inside, you'll view the inverted image of the palm, which is how we encounter raw data before the brain processes it.

From here we see absurdist costume dramas played on a seamless loop, much text-based work - which is quite dull - and sculptures resembling the works of Judd. Occasionally, Graham's obsessive mental convolutions go on a tiresome-loop themselves, for instance a music piece plays a few notes of Wagner's Parsifal repeated to some complicated mathematical pattern that's almost impossible to follow.

But it's Graham's own music that proves to be the best part of this show. The accompanying soundtrack for Phonokinetoscope, a film of the artist dropping acid and cycling through a park, is a wonderful cross between Syd Barrett and Smog, while a slide projection of Kurt Cobain's home town of Aberdeen, Washington, has a funky drum'n'bass accompaniment. You can see why Cobain really must have hated the place, but the soundtrack - improbably sampling Petula Clark and Alice Cooper among others - somehow performs its transformative magic.
