A Dynamite entry

Jonny Wilkinson, Jude Law and Ms Dynamite have been acknowledged among the great and good of Britain.

They are some of the most notable new arrivals in the exclusive reference book, Debrett's People of Today 2005.

Although Wilkinson has been plagued by injury since England's Rugby World Cup triumph last year, he remains a sporting icon, while Law has cemented his movie star status.

The inclusion of Ms Dynamite, who is listed under her real name Niomi McLean-Daley, is recognition of her success as a rap singer and her campaigning on social issues.

Those unfortunates who have been ejected from Debrett's include Sir Jimmy Savile, former MP Edwina Currie and pop singer Natalie Appleton, who recently appeared in ITV1's I'm A Celebrity - Get Me Out of Here!

Among their replacements are Jacqueline Gold, chairman of lingerie chain Ann Summers, and Fran Healey, lead singer of Travis.

The reference book lists more than 25,000 of what it sees as Britain's top achievers.

There are 700 new entrants this year, but a place one year does not guarantee acceptance the next. Mrs Currie, whose writing career kept her in the book after her political career ended, was axed because, according to the publishers, 'Lit wise - she doesn't cut the mustard'.

It was not just Miss Appleton who was ejected. The rest of All Saints got the same treatment, as did TV presenters Jamie Theakston and Bob Holness. Footballers Paul Gascoigne, Dwight Yorke and David Seaman suffered the same fate, together with sprinter Dwayne Chambers.

Debrett's welcomed Karan Bilmoria, the chief executive of Cobra Beer, and Christopher Bailey, creative director at Burberry.

Joining Wilkinson in the book is former England coach Sir Clive Woodward along with other members of the Rugby World Cup winning squad. The new names added to Debrett's, and those removed from it, are agreed by its editor-in- chief Charles Mosley in consultation with his staff, who are experts in a range of fields.
