Since its inception in 1978, Marmite has drawn battle lines across breakfast tables everywhere. The yeasty umami-rich spread - which also happens to be vegan - is celebrated by some for its strong salty taste, while others recoil at the mere utterance of it.

It’s a badge the brand wears with pride; in 1996 two young ad execs coined the phrase “You either love it or hate it” and it’s stuck ever since.

What side of the fence you stand on is a matter of genes. According to ‘The Marmite Gene Project’ some of us have genetic markers (single nucleotide polymorphisms, or SNPs) that means we can’t get enough of the stuff. SNPs are the same thing that mean some love coriander, while others only taste soap.

It’s enjoyed a bit of a revival recently, with recipe box service Gousto dedicating a series of dishes laced with the tangy spread.

Now the brand has launched a brand new version which promises to set your senses alight: Marmite Chilli.

Available exclusively at Sainsbury’s Marmite Dynamite is set to bring new experiences breakfast times and late-night toast munching. It promises ‘explosive’ flavour, so it could be wise to have a glass of milk on standby.

Our initial reaction? As long-time Marmite lovers, combining the spread’s saltiness with the warmth of chilli sounds like a match made in heaven.

Stay tuned to our Instagram page where we will be trying Marmite’s latest launch just as soon as we can get our mitts on it.
