Saga blazes new trail

Saga has come a long way since Sidney de Haan started the company in 1951 offering out-of-season holidays to the over-65s in Folkestone.

Now, Saga holidaymakers are five times more likely to head for Borneo than Bournemouth. Bungee jumping may not figure yet, but Saga's latest Travellers World brochure, out on Monday, offers holidays for crumbly would-be cowboys. A new 11-night holiday, Trailblazin' in the Old West, gives over-50s a chance to live on dude ranches in Arizona (from £1,299). Also new is a 17-night tour of South Africa and Namibia - one of the highlights is an overnight train ride across the Namib desert (from 1,899).

Retired detective Mick Easton secured his place as one of the 16 tribe members on ITV's Survivor thanks to Saga. He sent in a holiday snap standing at the summit of Borneo's Mount Kinabalu. The Saga banner he was waving clinched it.

Saga Magazine's biggest postbag ever came after a request to hear from motorbiking readers. Ancient Angels - including a 57-year-old with a Honda Super Blackbird 1100cc and a 78-year-old with a Honda Fireblade 928cc - inundated the mag with letters.

If Saga's current bid for the Liberty radio licence is successful, the 3.7 million Londoners aged 50-plus could soon have a round-the-clock station.
